Words for Sale by Jacintha A. Mondesir and Jamerson R. Lewin is a charming children’s picture book about a boy with a speech and language impairment. It is beautifully illustrated by Margarita Fomenko. Frustrated and unable to express himself, Jameson knows he has to find a way to share his thoughts. To relieve himself from his frustration, he takes out his chef uniform and starts mixing and baking. Then his words pour into the cake he is baking. He finds out that he can share his thoughts of love by baking. Soon his cake is done and his neighbors, smelling the scent of the cake, knock on his door. He shares the cake with them and they happily partake of the treat. Jameson, in his unique way, is finally able to express himself.
Jacintha A. Mondesir and Jamerson R. Lewin’s Words for Sale is a must-read for children or adults who are not able to verbally express themselves. The story is simple and easy to understand but strong enough to capture a child’s imagination. Told in rhyme, the cadence is playful so that it’s enjoyable to follow the rhythm of the story. The illustrations perfectly complement the text and enhance the tone. What makes this picture book heart-warming is that it is the true story of the co-author, Jamerson R. Lewin, who has a speech and language impairment, and a passion for cooking. His story should inspire children and adults to find a creative way to help them cope with their frustrations and understand themselves better. Words for Sale is a perfect bedtime story for children of all ages. Highly recommended!
