Wolf is a Four-Letter Word: Book Two of the Eternal Spring, Invisible Forest series by Carrie Newbury follows the exploits of a shifter named Kellan. Finn knocks on her bedroom door early one morning to tell her that a mutilated body has been discovered in the town. The mage Janus sends Kellan to investigate and she begins to suspect Aza, “the horror.” A high-ranking dark fey and a known killer, Aza claims that Kellan unwittingly transgressed the contract that bound her to stay away. Kellan realizes that a friend who she has adopted as her “pack” is in danger, and offers herself instead. Will Kellan regain the nerve to fight again, and will she ever be able to resume her relationship with the patient Tony? Exactly what is going on with her renegade sister?
Wolf is a Four-Letter Word by Carrie Newbury is a well-developed shifter adventure. The plot includes action, romance, and suspense. I liked the setting, which alternated between human settlement and the forest haven of Sankhain Academy. I enjoyed reading about the antics of the adorable dog Galen, who was Kellan’s companion. It was incredibly cute when Galen sneaked a drink from the magical spring. I also appreciated the humorous realism as the heroine’s sense of smell worked overtime! All the elements of the narrative combined to make the characters feel like old friends as I read. The hints of more complex mysteries to be solved beyond the scope of the current book were exceedingly tantalizing. If you love shifter action, this fantasy will deliver your next dose of excitement.
