Without Limits by Dustin Grinnell is an aberration from the usual run of the mill thrillers. The book begins with something close to anyone’s heart – a sporting event! The Great Wall Marathon in China is in progress and the race is being followed with keen interest by some very involved viewers who watch Michael, a runner racing along miles ahead of the other racers, who also have the formidable East African runners among them. Then the race ends with Michael crossing the line in a record time, literally falling into the safe arms of his waiting father! Not a great ending, eh? Well, the story actually starts here and in the next few pages there is an unforgivable and unforgettable hair-raising event and I started turning the pages frantically to find out what came next!

Without Limits is a well researched thriller focused around real institutions and well known events, for instance international marathons. The tension is taut and gripping. The story flows smoothly. The story line has many threads, keeping the reader guessing through to the end. The emotional interplay between the protagonists Dana, McKnight, and Evan is fascinating. It is full of surprises about the extraordinary and unknown research being done in many fields at the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, and the questionable object for which some very esoteric research is being done. Yet, this book maintains a high level of ideals throughout, with the good in the protagonists battling the evil in them. A memorable sentence indicating the high ideals the book strives to highlight is: “We live in an age of inferior men, Evan. An age where politicians only care about their careers, where accountants make up balance sheets, where banks exploit honest, hard-working people, and where rocket scientists become stock brokers just to get rich quick.”

The book is excellently written with impressive detailed descriptions of the specialized training and pressures that the entire chain of manufacturers, trainers, organizers, and the ultimate participating athletes undergo in sporting events, ending in a brilliant innovative climax. The author has gone the extra mile in his research and enhanced the plausibility of the story immensely. This book is an eye opener in every way and deserves a 5 star rating.
