The oft-repeated Shakespearean phrase, “the eyes are the window to your soul,” couldn’t be more true than the window they represent in a young child. There is so much love glistening in a child’s eyes, along with trust, hope, and perhaps even a promise for the future. Anything and everything opens the doors to a world of possibilities: “No dream is too big, no idea too small./ With eyes like yours, you can conquer it all.” Such inspirational and encouraging words, but, simply put, “The world is your oyster, it’s yours to explore./ With eyes like yours, why ask for more?” We are created with that special power to be uniquely ourselves, full of joy and adventure and so many positive possibilities. All we need to do is step out into the world, and the stage is ours on which to perform.
Lori VandenBroek’s picture book story, With Eyes Like Yours, is an inspirational little gem for young readers, especially girls. Told in rhyming verse and frequently repeating the phrase, “with eyes like yours,” the author leads young readers through a realm of positive possibilities of what they can and should do. It also stresses that a mother’s love is limitless and it doesn’t matter how well you do something, but rather how much you try. Like Robert Munsch’s popular book, Love You Forever, this book compassionately portrays the special bond between parent and child and how it’s reflected in not only the child’s eyes, but the parent’s eyes as well. The illustrations are calming and delightful and help carry the story forward. Absolutely beautiful, a real gem of a book to be shared often between caregiver and child.
