Eva Maze’s book, With Ballet in My Soul: Adventures of a Globetrotting Impresario, is an unforgettable memoir. Ms. Maze’s childhood home was in Bucharest, Romania. As a little girl, her dream was to become a ballerina. However, this dream was ended by her parents after Eva had scarlet fever and nearly died; they would not allow her to overexert herself. She and her parents moved to the USA in 1939; a fortuitous move, as the Nazis invaded Romania within a few years. After high school graduation, she met Oscar Maze, an Air Force lieutenant. At age twenty she was married, they were transferred to several cities, and she returned to her first love – ballet classes, leading to some minor performing roles. Oscar and Eva went on to live a life full of international moves. Eventually, she directed her love of the arts to becoming a prominent international impresario – quite remarkable for a woman during earlier decades.
Although this memoir details the life of a remarkable woman, it documents many important historical world events. From life in England shortly after WWII, to New Delhi in the 1950s, to being a part of the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics, to living in Greece during turbulent times, there is a wealth of interesting, factual material. She includes many photographs, newspaper articles, and personal artifacts throughout the book. In With Ballet in My Soul: Adventures of a Globetrotting Impresario, Eva Maze shares many memories from her extraordinary life. Ms. Maze is an excellent writer, captivating the reader from the first chapter to the last. A most impressive book!
