Wisdom from the Wild: The Nine Unbreakable Laws of Leadership from the Animal Kingdom uses animals to teach leadership skills. Author Julie C. Henry calls her book a “fun, new approach to leadership.” Henry’s principles include overcoming fear (based on spiders), developing a singleness of purpose (based on sea turtles), developing diversity (based on giraffes and termites), and six more. There are many personal anecdotes, and each chapter ends with “pro tips” and a “behind the scenes” story. Additionally, each of the book’s three parts ends with a “field guide,” where readers can write down their personal thoughts on the topic under discussion. Henry is not only an animal lover. She formerly served in management at a zoo and aquarium and now runs a leadership consulting business. The book is for both new and experienced leaders.
I’ve read many books on leadership, but Wisdom from the Wild is unique. And I mean that as the highest compliment. Author Julie C. Henry’s idea to base leadership principles on animals was brilliant. Who would have thought human leaders could learn from the instincts and actions of animals? Henry did, and the result is an excellent, enjoyable read that any leader or potential leader will profit from. And not only can leaders learn from reading the book itself, but anyone who reads Henry’s book will look at animals in a new light, asking themselves what other knowledge they can acquire from their non-human friends. Henry’s book does what every book should do—not only teach readers but make them think. I highly recommend this excellent, challenging book.
