Eric Michael Craig's science fiction novel Wings of Earth: Dust of the Deep is set in deep space. Captain Ethan Walker of the Olympus Dawn is an indie ship-master and deep space cargo hauler. His broker and crew member “Ammo” finds a high-paying load for them. Hauling cargo in deep space is risky and high-profit cargo attracts pirates. The Olympus Dawn is to drop off personnel and cargo at an archeological site deep in the Cygnus sector. Walker’s cargo haul becomes riskier and more dangerous when the archaeologist who knows the exact location of the site disappears from the pickup port. The tension ratchets up several notches when Walker is trapped by a pirate, Captain Kendrick Jetaar of the Blackwing. A deadly struggle follows for control over the cargo and the archeological site.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Eric Michael Craig's Wings of Earth: Dust of the Deep for its compelling characters and nonstop suspense. I loved Craig’s descriptions of characters, spaceships, ports and star systems, creating the story’s vivid deep space setting. Captain Walker draws on his ship-master's experience and knowledge, and his insight into human nature, to deal with the dangerous Captain Jetaar and the arrogant archeologist Dr. Makhbar. The Olympus Dawn crew is a powerful part of the story. Each crew member is formidable and very capable of fighting in life and death situations. I loved the way Craig shows the teamwork and camaraderie of the crew and Captain Walker. Their conversations, their give and take in tense situations flow with humor, sarcasm, and wit. Dust of the Deep is fast-paced with twists and turns from start to finish, and is great fun to read!
