Sherri Wingler is the author of The Immortal Sorrows and The Dark Woods series. She lives and works (way more than full-time) in Indiana.
Sherri shares her home with her husband, Steve, too many rescued kitty cats, and one co-dependent Shih Tzu named Spanky. Wings of Darkness: The Immortal Sorrows Series, Book 1 is a paranormal fantasy novel written by Sherri A. Wingler. Izzy was understandably disconcerted at waking up in what appeared to be a hospital room. Her body ached; her ribs itched; and there was a constant and annoying beeping coming from somewhere in the room. She saw her father sleeping in the chair next to her bed, but when she tried to call out to him, her voice sounded hoarse and rusty, and her throat burned. Her dad told her she had been in a car accident and that they had thought she might not pull through. Despite the pain she felt, Izzy was in a hurry to get up on her feet, get out of the hospital, and go back to finish her senior year in high school. And to everyone's surprise, it appeared that she was healing at a phenomenal rate. As her memory began to clear, she vaguely remembered being pulled out of the wreckage by a stranger, but the image was hazy and fleeting. Her return to school was fairly unexceptional, except for the sudden romantic interest of her old friend, Alex, and the strange appearance of a powerful looking blond haired man who no one else seemed to be able to see.
Sherri A. Wingler's dark and lovely paranormal fantasy, Wings of Darkness: The Immortal Sorrows Series, Book 1, follows Izzy as she attempts to get back into her daily routine, only to find things have been altered in ways that can never be changed back. Her yearning for the ordinary is never so apparent as on that day when she joins Gwen, her best friend, and Gwen's family for an afternoon of pumpkin carving and an evening of pizza and Halloween decorating. You can feel their thrill of excitement in the crisp autumn air as they finally turn on the holiday lights and light the jack-o-lanterns lining the walkways that glow orange in the dark. Izzy and Gwen are marvelously complicated and competent characters who are both complemented so well by the brooding Asher and dark Grim. Wingler's plot is inspired, and her writing is seductively smooth and richly nuanced. I was captivated by this book and loved every minute I spent reading it. Wings of Darkness: The Immortal Sorrows Series, Book 1 is most highly recommended.
