In Windfalling by Paul J. Nyerick, Jerry Johnson, a Vietnam veteran, sits peacefully on a mountainside, but all that changes in an instant. A small plane flying toward him explodes in a blinding flash, and then a single parachute floats to earth. The plane crashes into the canyon below, kindling a wildfire racing toward the fallen pilot. Jerry runs to the rescue and finds a beautiful young lady named E.D. Struction. E.D. seems more concerned about a box she lost falling to earth than the danger from the ensuing fire. Jerry and the young lady set out to retrieve the mysterious yellow box that contains symbols of the ancient peoples who flourished in the western hemisphere inlaid on the lid.
But, someone else has designs on that box. Harlan Diamond, the fourth richest person on the planet, wants the prize and will stop at nothing to get it, including murder. This starts an epic adventure when Jerry, E.D., and a couple of Marine Corps buddies, along with two renowned anthropologists, scramble across Southern California and Baja, Mexico, searching for an Aztec pyramid and the Crown of Knowledge. If only they can stay ahead of Diamond’s paid killers.
If you’re looking for an action-adventure that starts with a bang then only gets hotter as things progress, you can’t go wrong with Windfalling by Paul J. Nyerick. The author has put together a surprising cast of characters, with some good guys trying to stay ahead of a potential disaster and a mentally disturbed villain. The plot moves at a rapid pace for the most part, but does slow down occasionally during the protagonist’s musings and remembrances. However, that doesn’t detract from the overall quality of the book. Very well written.
