Will and His Best Friend Whale by K.A. Mulenga is a book that talks about very sensitive and important issues, such as bullying, the loss of a loved one, and caring for the environment that surrounds us. Will is a boy who has to go through all this and more, but with a positive attitude, he manages to face the obstacles that life throws at him. It is not easy being a child and having serious problems that could happen to anyone at the most unexpected moment. But having the courage to face them and overcome them is a great lesson that everyone must learn at some point. With this entertaining book with its clear illustrations, children can understand and talk about it.
This is a very different book from others; its content is more focused on reflection, which gives it a unique value within its category. Will and His Best Friend Whale tells a story in a very clear way about what serious problems a child can go through, and the way he handles it is very admirable. K.A. Mulenga does an excellent job of giving us several profound lessons in just a few illustrations. I liked the way he concretizes the concepts in the form of a story with well-chosen words for a young audience. He does it in a way so it's very easy to empathize with what Will is feeling at all times. Will and His Best Friend Whale is perfect for tackling tough topics with kids.
