Wibby loves playing pretend with her friends, and when they give her a superhero costume to wear, she falls in love with it, pretending to have superpowers. But when she finds herself in three situations in which sea creatures or people need her help, Wibby acknowledges that she isn’t a real superhero and doesn’t think she can be of any help to them. She runs away from each situation, feeling sad, but her friends help her see that she can help just the way she is, by using what she has and being herself! Wibby saves the day and is so glad to have helped others. Wibby The Whale: The Little Whale Who Loves to Pretend by Finnegan McFinnegan is an enjoyable picture book that is sure to bring a smile to young readers’ faces.
Wibby The Whale is a lighthearted read that pulled on my heartstrings by the end of Wibby’s story. I enjoyed watching her overcome her fear of not being able to help those around her, even though she wanted to, and I think it’s a lesson that many young children will be able to take to heart. I think it’s often easy to feel inadequate or not good enough in various situations, but our fears are often able to be overcome with a little bit of help and encouragement. The illustrations on each page were fun to look at, and I loved getting a glimpse of life in the ocean. Finnegan McFinnegan’s Wibby the Whale was an enjoyable read that I would recommend to children.
