Why We Give Gifts at Christmas Time, written by Corine Hyman, Ph.D., and illustrated by Julie Bryant, is a book that celebrates Christmas and will teach children the true reason for the Christmas season. The main character, a young girl named Evelyn, begins by introducing herself and then introduces her friends, one by one, and asks each one to share why she or he gives gifts to others at Christmas time. Each child explains and gives examples of giving to others. Evelyn concludes the book by explaining that she has learned to give gifts at Christmas and throughout the year because of Christ’s example of freely giving the gift of salvation. The Christmas Story found in Luke 2:1-20 is shared at the end of the book.
Corine Hyman, Ph.D. has written an excellent educational book for children as Why We Give Gifts at Christmas Time will teach and inspire children of all ages. I love the style of how this book is written as it is written in a conversational tone and in language that children will understand. The illustrations are beautiful in this book and go along perfectly with the text on each page. I also like that the book includes a diverse group of characters as children of many ethnicities will be able to connect with a character. This is a great book to share with children at the start of the Christmas season and will inspire children and adults to reflect upon the true meaning of Christmas and give to others.
