Why?: A Courtroom Drama of Self-Discovery is a legal thriller written by R.H. King, Jr. Dan Jackson is a visiting professor in Comparative Literature at Dartmouth College, his alma mater. He was up late the night before preparing a mid-term exam for his freshman class, and, as he's standing in front of his podium, he's perplexed to find two pistols sitting in his briefcase on top of those exams. He has no idea where the pistols came from and watches, horrified, as his hands pick them up, aim them at his students seated in the classroom, and begin pulling the triggers. Jackson finally drops the guns and leaves the room, hearing as he walks the groans and cries of the survivors. He surrenders himself to the police outside and is taken into custody. Jackson learns later that he slaughtered 15 of his students and injured 10 others, and he has absolutely no idea why.
R.H. King Jr.'s legal thriller Why? is an absorbing look into the criminal justice system, mass killers and the insanity defense. Jackson has done the unthinkable and he's unable to comprehend why he killed his students. This book kept me absorbed throughout the entire process as he selects an attorney, is interviewed by psychiatrists and prepares for trial. King is a fabulous story-teller, and he makes his story come to life. The characters of Jackson, Tim, and Jackson's attorney, Stanton, are compelling and credible, and anyone who's grown up watching the old Perry Mason shows, or read Earle Stanley Gardner's classic legal series, will be thrilled as they settle in to see how Jackson's trial concludes. I enjoyed every minute I spent reading Why? and highly recommend it.
