Whatever you do to others will return to you twofold or more. How many times have we heard these words of wisdom? Vic is the youngest of seven children, all of whom live with their widowed mother. She works tirelessly for long hours to feed and clothe them. He loves everyone and everything around him. He cares for injured birds; he even protects a wayward spider that chose to invade the tiny family home. As the youngest, however, he must wear clothes worn and outgrown by his older siblings. After six previous owners of the single shirt each child is allowed (their mother has no time nor the money to make more), by the time the single shirt is passed on to Vic, there’s hardly anything left. One day, his threadbare shirt gives way entirely, and he is basically wearing a thin rag. The creatures he once rescued come together to offer their assistance. It is obvious Vic needs (and definitely wants) a new shirt, a brand new one just for him.

Fran Levstick and Vesna Milek’s picture book story, Who Made Vic’s Shirt? is a clever retelling of a classic fairy tale, one that will touch the hearts of all who read it. Like all good fairy tales, this one is full of hidden messages and lessons, the most significant being the message of love and caring for those around us. The plot follows Vic’s adventures in nature, his good deeds to all living creatures, and the sad state of his only shirt. The beautiful illustrations help carry the story along as readers, young and old, will open their hearts to a renewed love for nature and everything around us in the world in which we live. Beautifully told and presented.
