White Skies Black Mingo takes place in the mid to late 1800s and tells the story of Kateri (her American name is Maggie), an Ohio Seneca Indian girl, and her lifelong struggles and joys. We meet Kateri as her tribe has been lost to an epidemic, traveling with her mother and grandmother to what they hope will be a better place. Kateri soon finds herself alone on the journey with only her two pet wolves for company. As she battles winter storms, no food, and injuries, she is found by a couple who bring her back to good health. She suffers being sold, being punished, being scared, hungry, and alone. Eventually, she becomes an almost-member of a plantation family, where she hones her healing skills, finds love, and finally feels almost safe. There is never a dull moment in this story and I do not want to ruin the edge of your seat excitement of the story.
White Skies Black Mingo is one of the best books I have read in a long time. I was a fan from the first word to the last. Author Kevin D. Miller made each word come alive and jump off the page with his vivid descriptive storytelling. Kateri was the sweetest of characters and it was impossible not to root for her in her times of hardship and in times of joy. White Skies Black Mingo is written about the Civil War, the unfairness that the Native Americans had to endure when they lost so much, and the treatment that the white man meted out to them. I highly urge you to read this amazing book – it will definitely not disappoint.
