White by Tim Lebbon is a haunting tale of desperation. A small number of people are trapped inside an old Victorian-era manor house, kept captive by weeks of never-ending snowfall. A disease of unknown origin has swept over the Earth like a wildfire, killing all who came in contact with it, as if Mother Nature were wiping clean the slate of humanity. These few survivors had sought out the remote manor as a refuge from the disease, powerless to know Mother Nature had a Plan B. Soon after their individual arrivals, the snow began to fall. Before long the radio could no longer find a signal to broadcast, television was off the air, and news of the fate of the world was replaced by pure speculation. Then they found the first body, and a new terror captured their imaginations.
White is a superbly original tale featuring a new and unique horror. The title refers to more than just the snow blanketing everything in sight. In turn, the survivors started seeing “things” out of the corners of their eyes… more a suggestion of substance than anything identifiable. Yet as the snow continued to accumulate, the sightings also increased. In spite of the increasing sightings, none could agree on exactly what it was they saw, nor could they decide if the sightings portended doom or were merely a result of cabin fever or snow blindness. The one thing they could agree on was that whatever they thought they were seeing was as white as the snow itself, and had only to stop moving to camouflage itself. Tim Lebbon is a prodigy at building suspense. White will worm its way into your brain, pull you into the story, and leave you gasping for breath at the end. White is a masterful novella of a horror you will not soon forget. I fervently recommend it for all who like their horror to take a personal interest in them.
