A family tragedy rips a young girl from her quiet life on a farm in Michigan, pre-World War II. For years, she refuses to speak and then she meets the butcher’s son. Together they build a world for themselves, each a haven for the other until war sends them on disparate paths of destiny. One will lose and one will win the life games of love and peace in a world gone mad. It is a story of love’s triumph over hatred wrapped in a supernatural shell that rivals the works of Dean Koontz.
Whispers in the Shadows, a supernatural thriller and completely fictional, is based on two real-life characters and events during WWII. Author Jason LaVelle’s distinct ability to meld fiction with truth is the definition of Stephen King’s quote: "Fiction is a lie. GREAT fiction is the truth within the lie." The story is maximum entertainment, a real page-turner, but it is also an eye-opening exposition of how love, persecution for sexual preferences, psychological abuse, desperation, war, murder and the spiritual unknown affect lives.
Whispers in the Shadows is the perfect mix of character and plot driven story. Characterization, dialog, the story's main and sub-plots blend to create a top-notch read guaranteed to remain in the reader's mind for days afterwards. A small disclaimer: For readers who cannot face reality regarding sex and violence (graphic depiction), this may not be to your taste. For those, like me, who appreciate verisimilitude in all aspects of writing, and appreciate fiction mixed with real world fact and language, along with a spoonful of the supernatural... Whispers in the Shadows is a must-read.
