Which Cape Will I Wear Today? by Kiara Berry is a delightful and imaginative little story about cultivating self-esteem in young children. The story opens with a layman’s definition of self-esteem, which is feeling good about the type of person you choose to be. It then begins to narrate a story about capes being reserved for superheroes, then affirms that we all have to be our own superhero before we can be anybody else’s. The pages feature children of different ethnicities, each wearing a cape that helps the child become confident and wield the courage to go through life. A child’s cape is said to appear whenever he or she thinks positive thoughts or believes in what he or she is capable of doing. When capes don’t appear as a result of self-doubt, it is comforting to know that the people who care for them are there to share their capes as a step for children to make their own capes appear.
Judging from this story, Kiara Berry understands the value of self-esteem—especially among kids. This is a story that captures the right visual metaphor for the theme—invisible capes labeled with the virtues that we all want our children to have. I simply love the idea, because I loved playing pretend when I was a child, and part of it was wearing a bath towel as my cape which gave me a great feeling. Every child is different, and as self-esteem may come more easily to some kids than others, Which Cape Will I Wear Today? inspires children to raise their self-esteem. Zach Orr’s illustrations are worthy of mention here as his beautiful and evocative visual contribution enriches children’s reading experience; the artwork helps to make concrete an important theme. I highly recommend this book for the brilliance of its message and art that both parents and children will appreciate.
