When Things are Set Right by Jordan St. James is the first book in The Silversaar Legacy series. Aeryn’s life should follow the same path as her family, but she wants to explore life outside her village and leave behind her grief. She finally gets a chance in the form of an unusual discovery. She meets a battered and bruised former slave with strange markings named Grim, who is determined to achieve justice for his people. Aeryn isn’t sure she can believe his claims about his past, but she isn’t about to give up her opportunity to leave under the guise of helping him return to his origins. Their trip takes a turn she couldn’t have predicted when she discovers that danger could be traveling next to her. With time running short, conflict is growing on the horizon, and their only chance is to gather his people before an evil force can finish what started years prior.
Jordan St. James maintains a reality that draws you into this world, from the vivid surroundings to the various details about the people, elves, orcs, and other creatures. Aeryn is a strong-willed character with a lot of spirit and strength, seen at multiple moments throughout her journey. She wants to leave behind her grief over the loss of her daughter. The dynamic relationship between Aeryn and Grim is well-written. They have genuine chemistry, evident in how they work together to save everyone from the Rune Reaper. Several characters come into Aeryn’s life throughout the journey, but one that stands out is a bird named Weaver, that serves as a friend and ally, even coming to her defense during an attack. Dark imagery woven throughout creates the world Aeryn faces, helping readers understand why she’s desperate to get out of the village. The trip Aeryn and Grim take begins with a mild and sunny day which slowly morphs into a journey filled with increasing danger. These dangers include action-packed combat, approaching inclement weather, and instances of violence. When Things are Set Right contains a vivid world, strong heroine, great characters, and quality narrative.
