What's Forever For? by Dr. George "Jeep" Naum is a self-help book that blends fictional anecdotes with non-fiction advice in order to help readers on the path to “Everlasting Love and Success in Marriage” through the guidance of a family physician and marital coach. Broken down over the course of nine separate and interconnecting chapters, Dr. Jeep covers all manner of insights from digging deep into why we marry and the words we use that have the impact to build up or tear down, the background stories and marital woes of three couples--Delores and Phillip, John and Elaine, and Denise and Frank--and weathering the storms of matrimony, among many other things. Each chapter concludes with a question and answer series,
Dr. George “Jeep” Naum uses biblical scripture, although not exclusively or even excessively, as a foundational element in What's Forever For? while also drawing from the ideals of other faith-based philosophies and his experience as a physician to make for an all-encompassing and wholly inclusive guide. There is also an entire section on the struggles found in a marriage where one spouse is a physician themselves, offering fresh insight on what one might consider a niche form of marital counseling that I have not come across before. The most interesting case story to me was John and Elaine, and particularly John, a doctor, and his backstory that involves multiple harmful vices and a tumultuous upbringing, all of which contributed to a marriage that was fraught with unhappiness and betrayal that Elaine arguably enabled with her own co-dependency. The issue that really stood out to me is the financial abuse John leveraged against his own children in order to prevent estrangement. It was both shocking that he does it but also sad that his children comply in order to retain the legacy they so clearly place above their own sense of dignity. This is a really compelling book with a great deal to offer and I'm certain others who take the time to read it will feel the same way.
