What in the Sam Hill? Be the Hero of Your Own Story by Karen Barbaro Potochick is the story of a young girl named Sam who wants to be just like her dad and solve crimes. Sam is your average 12-year-old girl; she has a brother and a sister, and she has a father who is a detective and a mother who is a home-maker. Sam is homeschooled by her parents and taught martial arts as well. She was satisfied with her life and she knew that she had everything that she could want. But when her neighbor’s diamond ring was stolen, she got this urge to become a detective just like her father. Harnessing her knowledge from her father and her mother, she embarks on a journey to solve the crime and bring about justice. Can she find the person who stole the ring? Will she be able to do it all as she wishes?
This is such a refreshing story. Young readers who enjoyed Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Kim Possible are going to love this book. Sam is the underdog; she is the one that everyone roots for because she is relatable and believable. She is smart, intelligent and exceptionally witty; her character gave the story an edge and a nudge in the right direction. I enjoyed how determined she was from the start to the end; she wanted to do something and wanted to make things better for everyone. I was very happy with the fact that the author emphasized how Sam had to become a hero for herself before she became a hero for someone else. This book is perfect for young readers!
