Bold and beautiful pictures leap off the pages of Watch Me Count by D.A. Batrowny. This entertaining and educational book will help children learn to count, but can also be used to learn about animals and colors. There are a variety of animals used in this colorful book that children and adults will read many times. The use of simple animal shapes on bold strong colors is appealing to children. “Where are the penguin’s eyes? Point to the monkey’s tail. How many owls are on this line? What color are the dogs?” are questions that parents or care-givers can ask children. Not only does it encourage dialogue, but also interactivity. Children love to participate and may learn faster when actively involved. There are so many other games adults can play with their young preschoolers, such as on page 14, “Which number is yellow?” The front cover collage of brightly-colored numbers is compelling and will attract attention, but also effectively illustrates the topic of the book. I wish my daughter was young again so I could read Watch Me Count with her.
D.A. Batrowny has created a winning combination of easy-to-read story, fun images, and bold colors to create Watch Me Count that will be read over and over again. Watch Me Count encourages children to count the animals and learn the numbers one to 10, but that’s just the start! Use this book to learn colors, animals, and body parts, too! The short, easy-to-read sentences may also catapult children into learning how to read.
