Warrior's Peace II: Awareness Within the Dragon's World by William Spence is a collection of poems that cover a wide range of topics, rhythmic, and at times very abstract so that the reader has to pause and just feel the sound of the words or the rhythm. I am one of those who believe that poetry mustn’t have a perfect rhyme to be considered good poetry and quite often poets can lose the sense of what they write in the desperate search for rhyme. But when rhyme and meaning blend together, they echo the beauty of poetry. In many of the poems, William Spence succeeds in creating rhyming patterns that add to the music of his poetry while provoking readers to deep thought.
In a style that seems to be second nature to the poet, he explores themes such as political reality, intellectual pursuits, moral implications of human choices, and the plain exploration of reality as he perceives it. There is an impersonal tone that permeates the writing, creating an urge in the reader to probe and to delve deeper into the inner meaning of the poems. I enjoyed a variety of these poems, especially those that capture attitudes of mind and behavior. One has the feeling that William Spence writes with confidence, enjoying the freedom to set the rules of his own poetry. The diction isn’t common, but after reading few poems, the reader quickly gets used to the author’s style. Warrior's Peace II: Awareness Within the Dragon's World is an intellectual kind of poetry that comes across eloquently in its originality and the seasons of the mind that it evokes. An enjoyable collection!
