Walls of Sakaret is a work of fantasy fiction penned by author Gerone Blomgren. This dark and tense fantasy thriller begins in the insular hidden city of Sakaret, whose ancient walls have kept the outside world at bay for a long time. Alsed is a young man who has never seen anything beyond them, but everything changes when the interloper Jeresa arrives. Jeresa is determined to save her people from a dangerous plot by a maniacal demigod, and her mission destroys the isolation of Sakaret forever. Alsed and his companions join with Jeresa, embarking on an epic quest through darkness, magic, and prophecy.
Author Gerone Blomgren weaves a heroic tale with the constant threat of its sinister undertones, which makes for a thrilling reading experience and a genuinely 'un-put-down-able' book. I was amazed by the sweeping depictions of exciting, exotic foreign landscapes as the author gives each moment a visceral, realistic experience that draws you in far more than cinema ever could. I liked Jeresa in particular for her strength and fortitude, but also her vulnerability and relatability as a woman striving for better for her people. The adventures set out along the main plot line are well conceived, each given their moment to shine, and purposeful in discovering more information and developing the main characters’ skills to use later in the tale. Overall, Walls of Sakaret is a powerful debut novel with much to offer its readers, and I would highly recommend it for fans of traditional high fantasy with an exotic twist.
