Walking Among Giants: A Painter in Paradise by Michael S Meusch is a powerful novel with a captivating setting, laced with historical references and personages. It could be read as a love story or a novel that explores the workings of the mind of an artist. Robert has just completed his stint in the Great War and is ready to undertake the greatest of his dream adventures: visiting Paris. He is drawn into a world with a cornucopia of pleasures, mingling with writers like F. Scott Fitzgerald, James Joyce, and painters like Picasso, and others. Follow the protagonist as he falls in love, suffers rejection, and how a French actress leads him deeper into a world of drugs and opium. Can the author resist the wave of sexual change that is sweeping through Paris or be swept away by the tide?
This is a powerful story with strong emotional and psychological depth. Told from the viewpoint of the protagonist, the narrative voice comes across strongly and clearly. The reader is introduced to a Paris that is eclectic from a cultural perspective and artistically charming, an irresistible Paris with its hub for artists — painters, filmmakers, the nightclubs, and more. The writing is fairly beautiful, although there are minor errors, but it is compelling enough to have the reader engaged throughout the narrative. The scenes are intense and readers will enjoy the emotional insights of the story. Michael S Meusch’s ability to draw the reader into the inner workings of the mind of the protagonist is salutary. I found Walking among Giants: A Painter in Paradise beautiful and entertaining, with characters readers will enjoy and a setting that is as vivid as the loveliest streets in Paris.
