Callie Taylor is murdered and she expects to be sent straight to heaven or, worryingly, hell. Surprisingly, she ends up in Abramsville, Dallas. She tries to go back to her hometown, but she cannot go beyond the city’s limit. Her life as a ghost there is lonely, until she witnesses the murder of Molly McClatchey. She determines to catch the killer because Molly’s husband, Rick, is accused of the crime. Knowing that she needs help from the living, she searches for a ‘sensitive’, someone who is able to communicate with a ghost. Haunting and hilarious, Waking Up Dead is the first installment of the Callie Taylor series written by Margo Bond Collins.
Waking Up Dead is attention-grabbing from the get go and reminds me a lot about my favorite 1990 film, Ghost. The prose is flawless, comprehensible, and frank. The plot is well-constructed and not redundant with other tangential details. It has a clear direction and great twists from start to finish. I liked the friendship pairing of Callie and Ashara – I enjoyed their witty banter. I also absolutely adored the funny and wise Maw-Maw. When Stephen joins the group, the unofficial, somewhat vigilante crime-solving team felt complete. There are some crime-related parts that I found a bit difficult to read but, overall, the story is not laden with disturbing details. The ending is great with a cliffhanger that promises more things to come for protagonist Callie Taylor and her living friends. Simply put, this is an excellent and faultless paranormal series from Collins.
