The Bark Crew are three sweet dogs that teach children big lessons. Wagging for a Walk: A Bark Crew Adventure by JB Henly is a children’s picture book that finds the dogs—Max, Lola, and Rocky—eagerly awaiting a trip to the dog park. Each dog has its own personality and expresses their excitement by a different type of tail wagging. As the three dogs walk to the park, they hear a whimpering from a nearby bush. On investigation, they find a lost kitten. What will the dogs do? Will they scare the sweet kitten or show compassion? Dogs and cats are considered natural enemies, so how will this adventure play out? The young reader will learn the important skills of interacting with those who are different. Wise parents teach their children how to show compassion.
JB Henly has hit a home run with Wagging for a Walk. This children’s picture book opens the door to several themes for discussion: kindness, compassion, acceptance, and helpfulness. The Bark Crew shows how caring puts concern into action. They seek to help by asking others, including a police officer, if they know where the lost kitten belongs. Love and compassion look past our differences and focus on the needs of others. It is always kind to stop and help someone. The story reminds the reader that showing kindness to all is always the right thing to do. Discuss with your child how those considered different are more like us than most realize. Focus on the commonalities instead of the differences. Look beneath the surface and recognize we are all the same. Kelly Bryant does a great job of illustrating this book.
