Pulling no punches, Voices of Diversity is a powerful collection of statement poems by Vanessa Caraveo that does exactly what it sets out to do – it makes people sit up and take stock of themselves and the world in which they live. Characterized by the poet herself as a collection of poems that advocate encouragement, empowerment, unification, and inclusion as well as the acceptance of human differences, Caraveo’s poems would never be called narrative, lyrical, or particularly metaphorical. Her poems, written in free verse, are statements that speak eloquently of social and political injustice and economic hardships.
Voices of Diversity is divided into three sections; Inclusion and Empowerment, Cultural Diversity, and Diversity Heroes. Seasons and Times speaks of wanting, needing, and doing; Choices is about two individuals and the people they’ve chosen to become; Not a Child is about young Serena – "She’s not just a child; She’s one who never accepted defeat, And she brought the world to her feet"; I Found a Friend – “I found a friend in you; one who is irreplaceable and true, I found a friend who accepts me for me. I found a friend who is proud to be with me. Yes! I found a true friend who openly acknowledges me”; Now You Know – “Now you know, We are different But together. Now you know, We can speak in one voice And be heard. Now you know, We can hold hands without discrimination And attain greater heights. Now you know, Our differences make us beautiful Anywhere we go”. And finally, there is A Seat for Everyone that speaks most eloquently of the ugliness that was segregation. With Voices of Diversity, Caraveo audaciously achieves power through her poetry and demands the truth from her audience – a very powerful combination indeed!
