Verses of the Void is an epic sci-fi space opera by Joshua Clark. In the dystopian dawn of the 23rd century, Earth has been ravaged by climate change leading to a shortage of food and other resources, while the human colony of Mars struggles to terraform the planet. The Interorbital Defensive Alliance is in a constant state of war with the radicals known as Haven, who prefer humans to focus on saving Earth. Caught amid these momentous events are Chris Weaver, the descendant of a great woman who dreams of traversing the stars; Tom Latham, a soldier struggling with PTSD; Raya Nazim, daughter of a Haven double-agent who is now an Alliance medic, and Maceo Ndiaye, an orphan seeking revenge on his parents' killers. Circumstances bring these unlikely heroes together on a quest to search for habitable planets light-years away from home.
If you love epic stories set in space, Verses of the Void is a tailor-made book for you. Akin to James S.A. Corey's The Expanse, Joshua Clark's novel follows a multiple-POV cast as different factions struggle to survive in a dystopian future where a lack of resources and war test resilience and loyalties to the limit. The lines between good and evil blur as war forces people to make tough choices to survive, compelling them to do the opposite of everything they believe in. Clark does a brilliant job of crafting characters who feel like real people, with vulnerabilities and inner conflicts that affect every decision they make. The plot is intricately woven, containing twists and turns that take you by surprise. As a sci-fi fan, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and can't recommend it highly enough.
