Veiled In Brick by Eliza Modiste is a romantic thriller that is witty, sexy, and steamy. Our heroine, Zoey, sees herself as strong and independent with both feet planted firmly on the ground. She detests romance but enjoys moments with guys: on the bed, in an alleyway, in the back seat of the car, or in the middle of the woods, with no strings attached. But, there is James, tall, muscular, and covered with tattoos, who seems to inch closer and closer to her heart, and Liam, her blond-haired best friend, who hides his troubled past behind a carefree playboy façade. But this is not all; lurking in the shadows is a third admirer, a stalker who sends her flowers and waits to snatch control of her life and have her all for himself.
Eliza Modiste's Veiled In Brick is a steamy page-turner with a well-written transition from a witty rom-com to an engaging romance thriller. Zoey's move from eschewing romance to finally falling in love was not rushed and felt original. Likewise, Zoey's choice of a partner felt natural and not for plot enhancement. I could feel the chemistry between them, which was evident in how they helped to build each other up and their dialogue. The sex scenes are detailed and steamy, burning through the pages. Their group of friends was supportive, and I cannot wait to read their own stories in the series. Pick up Veiled In Brick if you like a sassy, strong heroine and a romance filled with danger.
