Karen Harper fans will love her latest mystery/romance novel entitled Upon a Winter's Night. Lydia Brand is an Amish woman who has always known about her adoption following the untimely deaths of her biological parents. But now, as a woman, Lydia longs to know her roots. Not wanting to upset her parents, Lydia solicits the assistance of Josh, a neighbor who own animals. Lydia is attracted to Josh as she tends to his animals but she is being pushed to marry Gid, a steady man who works in her father's furniture shop. When Josh's female friend begins to assist Lydia in her search to find her birth parents, she is found dead in Josh's barn and he becomes a suspect. Another woman meets an untimely death and that brings in local law enforcement as well as the press. The small town of Homestead threatens to become chaotic as Christmas is near and the town is swarming with strangers, all who want some part of the Amish people who have always appeared elusive to the English.
Upon a Winter's Night is one of those novels that strikes a chord in readers who harbor the need to find out who they really are. It is a novel for those who are not quite content to have decisions made for them. It is a story for those who long to set things right while respecting the values of those who love and support them. Lydia is a marvelous character. She is tenacious while remaining loyal. She is adventuresome while remaining true to her Amish upbringing. Daad is also a wonderfully-developed character. You just know he hides secrets but how he reveals them is a surprise and a delight! This is not just a story of Christmas; rather, it is a story of the human condition - the good, the bad and the hidden.
