The unforgettable moments David shared with his sister and friends at Camp Kachina might soon end. Rumors of long-lost treasure hidden nearby have attracted several greedy, corrupt people who will stop at nothing to get their hands on the bounty. They won’t think twice before demolishing Ghost Bear Lake and the forest. How can the misfits save the camp? Should they organize fundraisers so that the camp owner can buy the land? Should they look for the treasure themselves? What happens when David gets stuck inside a cave during an earthquake? Find out in The Treasure of Ghost Bear Lake, the third book in the Mud Street Misfits Adventure series by Brian O’Dell and Beth Lauderdale.
This book can be read as a standalone as the authors have incorporated plenty of background from the previous ones. I loved the camping experiences detailed in the writing. Educational games during the day and spooky stories by the campfire at night sounded so much fun! Uninhabitable caves with secret tunnels and moonlit lakes surrounded by dense forests added to the thrill. The various legends associated with the ghost bear wove a mystic aura through the storyline. The Misfits stole my heart with their constant banter and funny antics. I loved Liam’s assertive nature and Connor’s cheeky comments as much as Sarah’s level-headed approach and Molly’s quick thinking. I could sympathize with David’s self-doubts, be it regarding the identity of his biological father or his wish to become strong like Sarah. He remained skeptical of his newfound powers, yet it was his firm belief in the ghost bear that helped them through the ordeal. The Treasure of Ghost Bear Lake by Brian O’Dell and Beth Lauderdale conveys a profound message about conserving nature. I recommend this book to anyone who loves a middle-grade adventure story.
