Understanding God by an anonymous author is essentially a book of poetry. Each poem is on a page of its own and hence the poems are very short. To say that this book helped one to understand God would be a stretch. There are so many different concepts presented in understanding God that it is difficult to put together a total picture based on these concepts. Sometimes it is stated that God is a soul, or that He may be found through creativity or patience or many other means. The book is not fully compatible with the Bible, for those who are Bible believers. Knowing the Bible as I do, there are several instances where the information does not align with the Bible. Instead, it corresponds to several other types of spirituality.
Understanding God is not the type of book that can be read through quickly. Each page or each poem is a separate thought, although they do all tie together. It is probably best to read one each day, like a devotional program, because these involve a fair amount of reflection. There are 46 pages or poems and so it will take about a month and a half if a reader reads one each day. One statement I particularly like is that a God that can be understood is not the Eternal God. This reminds me of a very similar statement I have heard in the past and that I believe. People have many different concepts of God and since man has not seen God other than in biblical times, it is hard to say what is right. In that case as well, a God that can be understood is not big enough to be God.
