Under an Azure Sky by Wil Chan, Book One of Elysia Dayne, follows the life of The Hero of Northwind, the Knight Butcherer, The Protector of Pallet Township, Vanquisher of the Assassin’s Guild, and dragon slayer – Elysia Dayne. Before she became a dragon slayer, however, Elysia had a dragon best friend of her own… or so she thought. Elysia’s latest task is rescuing Princess Isabella Solemaine from the clutches of the goblin Black Fort. All does not go as planned as Elysia and Isabella find themselves trekking through the wilderness toward civilization with limited rations and patience for each other. Both have led very different lives with very different viewpoints of the world; will they overcome the dangers lurking in the wilderness or will their differences in upbringing, morals, and way of thinking be their downfall?
Wil Chan’s Under an Azure Sky took my emotions on a rollercoaster ride from start to finish. Elysia and Isabella are beautifully written characters. Seeing their relationship develop from animosity to friendship is wonderful and had me worry for each character’s safety whenever misfortune struck. I was frequently shown the horrors Elysia had to endure growing up as I went back and forth between her childhood and the present; the fears, the jubilations, strength, and purpose born from love and loss all melding into a character I highly admire. Environments are richly described and detailed for my imagination to picture. I want to especially mention Wil Chan’s masterful battle choreography – some of the greatest I have ever read. Under the Azure Sky is a pleasure to read and a grand first entry into Elysia Dayne.
