Twisted Trails: Least of the Beast is a collection of interrelated sports stories written by Alex Hutchinson. Connor Gamble was tired of riding in his father's shadow. Andrew Gamble was legendary in the mountain biking world, the most decorated biking athlete and well loved for his involvement in the sport. Then he was caught doping, using a performance enhancing drug. Andrew was able to evade the French authorities who had recovered his suitcase filled with the drug, and he disappeared, leaving an inconsolable wife and a young son. Connor's Uncle Neal became his mentor, friend, and father figure, giving the thirteen-year-old a home and a purpose. Now, Connor was ready to be recognized on his own as a competitive biker - not as his father's son - even if the strong family resemblance had people constantly doing a double-take upon meeting him. While he trained and tested on New England's rocky terrain, the single track known as BoldlyGo in Florida’s T. Mabry Carlton Reserve was an irresistible challenge for the somewhat cocky seventeen-year-old. Offered the choice of groups for the nighttime ride through the reserve, he ignored the cautions and blithely joined the more experienced A Group and was dismissive of his guide’s suggestions for better lighting. And yes, he knew there was a quagmire deep within Carlton that bikers called the Void, but he wasn't worried, yet.
Alex Hutchinson's collection of interrelated sports stories, Twisted Trails: Least of the Beast, is all about mountain bikers in a near future where enhanced bikes cause interest in the sport to burgeon into a major cultural movement, but it's really more than that. There's a grand coming of age tale that filters through Twisted Trails as the reader follows Connor Gamble in his quest to become more than merely the boy with the infamous father. Connor is no pedigreed athlete for whom all things come easily, and the tale following his visit to his uncle's store in search of the gear that would make him a champion is filled with warmth and wisdom that transcends sports. As an outdoors enthusiast who's long been interested in mountain biking, I was fascinated by this collection and found myself wanting more than ever to finally get that bike I’ve been dreaming of. Twisted Trails has everything: excitement, the outdoors, biking, biking, biking, and even a bit of romance. It's most highly recommended.
