Twist of Fate: A Jack West Novel by Deanna King is a mystery murder that follows Houston Homicide Detective Jack West as he navigates a web of unsolved crimes. After closing a challenging case involving teenagers, Jack and his partner, Dawson Luck, take on a 25-year-old cold case: a woman's murder behind a seedy motel and a missing prostitute. When a fresh murder-suicide of a wealthy couple takes precedence, the detectives wrap it up quickly, only to discover that their cold cases might be interconnected, leading them into a tangled conspiracy involving corrupt cops, executions, and high-level cover-ups.
Author Deanna King has cooked up a highly suspenseful and enjoyable mystery that was impossible to put down, with never a dull moment from cover to cover. King’s ability to weave multiple complex cases into a cohesive and engaging narrative is impressive, keeping readers hooked as they follow Jack West through unexpected twists and turns. As for West himself, our titular hero is portrayed as a tenacious and principled detective determined to seek justice for even the most marginalized victims, endearing him to us with excellent speech and thought presentation that gets deep into his psyche and emotions. King's writing is sharp and engaging, combining crisp dialogue with detailed scene-setting and offering Houston's gritty underbelly to immerse readers in the dark and suspenseful world of murder investigations and criminal conspiracies. Overall, I would certainly recommend Twist of Fate to fans of tense, imaginative, and well-penned mysteries everywhere.
