Turn Your Workplace Into a WOWplace! 5 Rules For Going From OW to WOW! by Sandy Geroux is a non-fiction guide for readers looking to deconstruct their company culture and environment, and rebuild in a way that makes people want to be there as opposed to having to be there for little more than a paycheck. Over the course of nine distinct but interconnected chapters, Geroux unveils the blueprint for her five-rule initiative. The framework falls under the following categories of what a WOWplace is: Safe, Respectful, Human, Innovative/Creative/Fun, and Rewarding. Each subsection contains real-world examples through power boxes providing a 'Case in Point', a succinct summary at the end of each chapter, and a series of templates and tools.
The idea of linking employee satisfaction to organizational success is, in the grand scheme of things, relatively new. A generation of millennials has come to understand the concept of normalizing a system that cultivates trust, openness, and true collaboration as far more mainstream than any generation before, where such concepts would have been almost unthinkable. What sets Sandy Geroux and Turn Your Workplace Into a WOWplace! apart is its ability to link the psychology to success with verifiable data and examples, and a thorough plan to implement it for maximum results. The top-down method simply does not work and when you have a workforce who spend, on average, over 90,000 hours of their life on the job, it's unrealistic to expect longevity of tenure and maximum output when the individuals—who, frankly, don't need you as much as you need them—are miserable. My favorite part is on the concept of arrogance versus confidence wherein the former does propel the latter but not at the expense of a loss of humanity. ie: a doctor with the arrogance/confidence to perform surgery but leaving arrogance out of the surgical room as they address their patient with care and compassion. This is an excellent book that should make its way to the bookshelf of anyone in a leadership position.
