I've been a homemaker and mother most of my life. I've worked in a variety of professions, including nursing. In 1994, I married a man who drove a semi-truck, and got a real education when I crawled into the truck with him. I wrote a funny and interesting book about the trucking industry and the wild trucker’s CB radio slang and stories from the road. I got the ride of my life in the passenger seat of a 'sure enough store bought large car', stylin and profilin', checking out the 'seat covers', watching the 'bushes for bears'.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live on the road, quite literally? To drive a truck, a big truck, all across the country and back again, over and over again? Have you ever wondered what type of person would want to devote their life to driving a truck cross country? Join author Donna Carver in Truckin' Up! to find out. It might be an interesting adventure in sightseeing, but it would also be an eye opener to the many varieties of personalities and characters. It's as if all examples of humanity can be found amongst truckers, but, for the most part they're a pretty good lot.
Author Donna Carver's husband is a truck driver and she has spent considerable time riding along with him on his jaunts across the country. She has learned the ropes, the language, the acronyms, the hidden code words and expressions, and seen the many diverse personalities. Through it all, there is that underlying sense of humor that carries the driver along the long road and to good and not-so-good truck stops along the way. Not to mention the other drivers, the real characters on the road, the ones who, as she looked down from her lofty position in the cab of the truck, "gave me a whole new perspective on everything. I saw people doing all kinds of crazy things while they were driving. People reading newspapers, writing notes, talking on cell phones, women putting on makeup, and businessmen juggling coffee and biscuits. There were people changing clothes or flossing their teeth while steering with their knees and even having sex while driving in heavy traffic." This is a whole new perspective on humanity. It's a real shocker.
This isn't so much a travel story as it is a story about the life of a truck driver. There is so much information that by the time the reader has finished, they are ready to take on the long road, to communicate effectively with other drivers and to watch out for the pitfalls along the way. “You got an alligator on the zipper at the 129 yard stick.” If this came over the radio, a novice might think there was an actual alligator on the road, when in fact it's a blown tire from another truck, one that could cause damage if caught underneath a fast moving truck. This is an interesting introduction to life on the road as a trucker.
