Trials and Tribulations: Volume II by Brian Keith Higgins is an absorbing collection of twelve flash fiction/short stories. A teenager struggles to deal with the loss of her bond with her beloved grandmother, who suffers from Alzheimer's. After losing an arm, a farmer battles with daily chores when a severe thunderstorm and a wildfire unexpectedly bring new friends into his life. Inhabitants of a small town come together to help the ones who lost the most in a devastating tornado. A little boy faces mortal danger from a mountain lion when his father comes to his rescue. After being lost at sea, a lobsterman finds his way back home through a miracle. With love and support from his childhood sweetheart, a young man deals with the ramifications of his accidental blindness.
Through this enthralling collection of flash fiction/short stories, Brian Keith Higgins tells slice-of-life tales that keep you engaged from start to finish. There is an underlying theme of hope in Trials and Tribulations: Volume II, which makes these stories the perfect comfort read to revisit from time to time. Higgins' characters are salt-of-the-earth people, the likes of whom you may have met in real life. And it adds a sense of realism to the narrative, which makes for a fascinating reading experience. Apart from the underlying theme of hope, these stories also touch upon love, friendship, family, faith, and community. Higgins' tales showcase how humans can find hope, courage, and resilience amid adversity. I enjoyed this collection, and if you love flash fiction or short stories, I highly recommend you pick up a copy.
