Something goes terribly wrong during an archaeological dig in Travelers by V.S. Holmes. Nel oversees her own crew and works on an interesting site off Chile’s coast. She has all her permissions, all her funding, and is looking forward to making some new discoveries about the people who lived in the region thousands of years ago. Unfortunately, a local group makes it clear to her that she is not welcome, and things become very serious when Nel continues with her research and stumbles across some intriguing things (also off the site). Her dig soon becomes more than just an archaeology site, and Nel needs to decide how far she’s willing to go to keep herself, her crew, and her friends safe.
It would be no surprise if some people thought Nel, the heroine of Travelers, was a Lara Croft copy but she’s not, and even admits that she’s “no Lara Croft” when she finds herself in a situation that Ms Croft would have handled with only slight discomfort, if any at all. Nel is her very own character and solves her problems in her own unique way – no need to compare her to anyone, and I’m sure she’ll become even more of a unique character in future adventures. I’m sure she’ll have quite a few interesting challenges to deal with, probably also on the romantic side. I found her love interest a fairly intriguing character, and can see how her own heritage could cause some issues in future novels.
The writing style of the book made it easy to read and the author found a great balance here. There’s nothing that makes you stop and re-read a paragraph because it isn’t clear what happened. You might stop to think about something that has been said by a character, but that’s because there are some quite interesting ideas in the novel (e.g. about the different reasons why people are interested in the history of humankind). I’d definitely recommend this book to people who enjoy the idea of aliens having been here before, and having left signs that can be found if people only dig deep enough (literally digging in this novel!).
