Transcendent by Jay Antani is a science fiction novella that takes place in deep space. A technical glitch on board a spaceship leaves mechanic Troy Hartman suddenly alone, accompanied only by the ship’s AI, Otto. Troy is trillions of miles away from any form of help, and the spaceship he’s on has been crippled. He desperately looks for a way to repair his ship and find a way home. Troy’s luck goes from bad to worse, and he soon discovers that his biggest problem is keeping himself from giving up. Then, something peculiar happens that may or may not be a glimmer of hope.
Transcendent is a well-written sci-fi survival thriller in the same vein as The Martian. This time, however, the lone survivor is in space rather than on a planet. Though the plot is simple, it still sports enough twists and turns to keep you guessing what will happen next. There is only one main character, and Jay Antani does a wonderful job of taking us inside Troy’s head and showing us what makes him tick. In addition, the science in this story felt authentic. Antani's descriptions of deep space and how the spaceship operates are pretty impressive and believable, as far as I was concerned. I also enjoyed the ending, which I would describe as a Twilight Zone ending. For an exciting and imaginative science fiction story that’s a little shorter than most sci-fi reads, I highly recommend it.
