In the epic saga, Traitor: The Old Man and the Priest's Betrayal by Hunter X. Johnson, an older man named Jason Kargo grapples with personal despair after his wife's tragic suicide and a wrongful accusation. His narrative takes an unexpected turn when he's invited to an exceptionally advanced far-flung Empire led by his aunt, after an urgent request from his grandfather. As he battles with the choice to face Earth's grim reality or explore an alien society riddled with peril, the Empire conceals a dark secret: a power-hungry traitor plots its downfall, partnering with deadly enemies, seeking to dismantle the dominion from within and threatening a war of total annihilation. Traitor is the first book in the science fiction The Warlord and the Multiverse series.
For those worried that an alternative future out in the celestial realms might not have Mexican food, worry not. Hunter X. Johnson has made assurances in Traitor, along with many other wonderful blends of what we know and what we imagine. As far as hero journeys go, this is among one of the best I've read over the past year. I love that the protagonist is not a young man and that he has lived a full life, one with both wonder and terrible grief. His arc as a character is incredible as we watch him develop from a broken man into one who is leading Marines into a cave as a quasi-messianic principal. The world-building and social structures, Jason's learning how to navigate the diversity of culture alongside politicking and bonafide battles, prophecies, and fantastical elements, like crystals, showcase Hunter's skill as a writer with the chops to immerse readers. And those twists! I am really excited to see where this series goes and will continue to watch Jason turn into the savior of countless lives.
