In Toxic Effects (Memory Thieves Series, Book 2) by Joel Shulkin, Dama Branca is ordered by Zero Dark to kill Mateo Gonzales, who is the Chief of Security at ReMind. Recently, Dama had frequent memory flashbacks, but she does not remember any of them. Dama’s boss promised to get rid of these memories after she had killed Gonzales. Christina Silva, who is going to join Longwood Memory Centre, was given a memory drug called Recognate and all her recent memories were planted. Christina had once been a researcher named Sabrina Carvalho but she was given Christina’s identity after Christina was murdered. On her first day at Longwood Memory Centre, Dr. Campbell wanted to study Christina’s brain. Meanwhile, Special Agent Jefferson is investigating the murder of Gonzales. Jefferson is convinced that Gonzales was killed by a professional. Curiously, eighteen employees of ReMind had also been killed over the past two months.
Toxic Effects by Joel Shulkin has a highly complex plot. The story was fast-paced with so many twists and turns I never knew what to expect next. It was jam-packed with action and never had a dull moment. I did not have to wait to find out what was going to happen. The chapters flowed naturally into each other. Several stories were woven together to form this awesome thriller. The characters’ descriptions made them realistic, and I could relate to them. They were strong throughout the story and my favorite character was Christina. She lived with two identities and had to hide who she was. I was curious to know whether she and Detective Gary Wilson would rekindle their relationship. The story is exceptionally well written, and it was a pleasure reading it. There was much more to it than I expected.
