In Tournament of Shadows, Michael H. Hyman and Andrew Capon take readers into the intriguing world of international finance and explore a fragile link that, if broken, could see the world economy come crashing down. And a malevolent government bond trader in London is about to do just that. Sovereign wealth funds—funds that individual governments have amassed—represent huge sums, and someone or some entity with very deep pockets is shorting the bond market aggressively, driving down the cost of US ten-year Treasury bonds. When the cost of those bonds go down, the yield goes up, forcing borrowing costs to rise, and that isn’t good for the economy. Someone is determined to destroy the value of the US dollar and it is up to Sarah Linderman and Jack Romanov to stop them. Can they unveil this mystery before it is too late and beat a shadowy character who is as intelligent as he is wealthy?
This is a well-plotted and expertly-written novel that offers insights on how the financial markets work. The authors write with confidence, creating characters that are rich and multilayered. The writing is stellar and it features compelling descriptions and great dialogue. Readers find insightful passages and lines to ponder on like: “Knowledge might be power, but in the markets, it was also money.” The authors meld different genres into this fascinating tale — murder, mystery, political intrigue, and suspense. The story kept me turning the pages to see what happened. The story allows readers to see the weaknesses in the financial markets. Tournament of Shadows is a delightful read, a page-turner that both engages readers and provokes reflection. It is well-researched and neatly written.
