Tokoyo is the young daughter of an important Samurai. Rather than spend her time in gentle pursuits, Tokoyo joins the Ama, a group of hardworking women who dive and forage in the sea to make a living. In a moment of respectful generosity, Tokoyo gifts the Ama with a valuable pearl she discovers while diving. This act has important ramifications for what is to come. Tokoyo’s father is wrongly accused of being a traitor and Tokoyo is in turn rendered homeless, but not hopeless. On a brave journey to find her father, Tokoyo encounters poverty, despair, decisions, and enemies both human and otherworldly. She has to call on her experience, determination, and friendships to make it through. Tokoyo, The Samurai’s Daughter is Book 1 in Faith L Justice’s The Adventurous Girls Series and is set in fourteenth-century Japan.

Based on an original folk tale, Tokoyo, The Samurai’s Daughter is a well-paced children’s adventure story that celebrates strong women. Faith L Justice gives the Japanese setting, culture, and mythology a light and natural touch, and even includes a glossary to make it more accessible. She brings an ancient tale to the modern reader using simple language, and suitably short chapters. The mix of myth and human motivation is balanced so that the tale is plausible. I enjoyed the scene where Tokoyo, after wise words from her Ama friends, realizes that the pursuit of revenge has limits and turns her attention to the future instead. This is a valuable viewpoint for the young reader. Tokoyo, The Samurai’s Daughter is narrated by Hannah J Rothman, whose voice has just the right balance between pace, clarity, and expression. This adds to the excitement of the story. I enjoyed my experience of listening to this short, confident children’s tale.
