Set in the year 1947, Tobacco Sun takes place in the village of Tobaccoville, North Carolina. It shares with us the tale of two sisters who have been estranged for years, driven apart by their status in life—Sydra, the younger sister, a stunning but cold Hollywood star, and Jimi-Lynn, the older sister, a soft-hearted country girl whose face is marred by her port-wine stain birthmark. The sisters share a dark past that comes to a head on the evening of the day they held their mother’s funeral. Will the shocking events of that night finally bring the sisters together, or will all that remains be ashes, like burnt tobacco floating on the breeze?
Lorna Hollifield’s debut novel touched my heart and moved me to tears more than once. Tobacco Sun had me on the edge of my seat with tissue in hand. Hollifield’s bold decision to tell this story from multiple point of views surprised me, but was so artfully executed that, upon completion of the book, I felt that not only was it the right decision for her story, it was the best decision. She masterfully wove a beautiful, if not heartrending tale of hope. Because of Hollifield’s exquisite way with words, you will find yourself rooting for the best outcome possible for both Sydra and Jimi-Lynn, hoping that they will find the redemption and happiness that they both desperately need—separately or together. I wholeheartedly recommend this book for emotionally mature readers, especially those with an interest in the New Adult or Southern Fiction genres.
