In Toad the Tanker, a picture book by Teri Weber, the title character is a KC-135 tanker jet that refuels military jets while they are in midair. One morning, he finishes his preflight and takes off with clearance from the tower. He finds Moose, who has burnt a large amount of gas and needs to be refueled fast to keep flying. Moose connects to Toad, and the two jets make sure they remain in the required position throughout the process of refueling. Soon Moose receives enough fuel from Toad to continue the journey. The tanker's job, however, is not over. Knowing that other friends need his support, he continues his mission. Before going to bed that day, he helps four fighter jets, ensuring their safe return.
Teri Weber’s Toad the Tanker is a short and delightful book. Through this story, Teri portrays the joy and importance of sharing. Toad does not fight like fighter jets or transport military equipment like Moose, but his role is crucial to the success of both. This shows the importance of acknowledging the contribution of those who provide support in their own way despite not being actively involved in a certain action. The fighter jets express their gratitude toward Toad, admitting that even tough warriors like them need his help. Through this scene, Teri conveys the message that asking for help is never a sign of weakness; no matter how strong someone is, he or she will need the support of others from time to time. Brenda Harris’ beautiful illustrations complement this simple and enjoyable book. Toad the Tanker is recommended for children aged four to six.
