Be ready to get inspired when you read A. Jordan Fischette’s book, To: The Ambitious, From: The Experienced—26 Letters on Leadership. This book is a compilation of 26 views from a variety of occupational backgrounds on what is leadership. Occupations as diverse as The Chief Marketing Officer, The Google Engineer, The Marine, The Teacher, The Super Bowl Coordinator, The Fashionista, and The Caregiver present a spectrum of different experiences. Yet, ultimately, there are many common similarities as to people involved in leadership. Interestingly, the author begins the book with a profile of The Fitness Expert followed by the Introduction by the Author. It seems this chapter precedes all others as it discusses a healthy life style as a prerequisite to leadership and the inspiration which follows. It was interesting to step into the shoes of each writer about their specific occupation and see how their normal work life varies, as many of them take the reader through a usual day or a specific day in their life so that we can get a small view as to what they do on a daily basis.
There are many common lessons of leadership which appear throughout the book, in spite of occupational differences. These include: supporting your staff for success, communication skills, the importance of acquiring new capabilities, learning to be comfortable about being uncomfortable, expressing appreciation for your staff, giving creative freedom to your staff, collaboration, the importance of paying your dues to learn your roles, work balance, asking questions and a host of others. The lessons I cited were only from the first six chapters alone. There is a wealth of ideas and lessons covered throughout this book on leadership, all from different authors, which makes it an extremely interesting and valuable book for everyone to read, regardless of their profession. To: The Ambitious, From: The Experienced—26 Letters on Leadership is an inspirational book on leadership with a diverse approach covering a wide spectrum of occupations. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in learning about a wide range of occupations and leadership.
