Life on a Kansas farmstead was not very easy at the turn of the 20th century, and Meg Connor has to face it alone after the sudden death of her husband in To Honor and Cherish by Christian fiction author Kari Trumbo. In this first volume of the Western Vows series, Meg takes over the responsibility of running the family cattle ranch with very little help. Hiring a ranch foreman is the only option for Meg, and the perfect opportunity for Jax, who is trying to keep one step ahead of a ruthless man out to get him. In spite of the threat of gossip since Meg is in mourning, Jax stays at the farm and hires a crew to drive the cattle to market. Plenty of action keeps Meg and Jax facing off, each hiding the growing feelings they develop for one another. Their lives are further complicated by the dysfunctional Whitte family dynamics that threaten to take the farm from Meg. Dealing with the result of these issues forces Meg and Jax to travel to Canada for what may be a final showdown in more ways than one. Will love prevail as Meg prays or will the threats from the past prove to be too strong?
Fantastic descriptions and solid character development provide great depth for this excellent Christian historical novel with a romantic twist. Kari Trumbo really lets you get to know Meg and Jax, as well as the others who impact their lives, so that you feel you are right there with them. Plenty of action keeps the story moving with some surprise twists, but the most important element is the way in which Meg turns to her faith for help and support, even realizing at times that she has not been as good a listener to the Lord as she could have been. To Honor and Cherish: Western Vows Book 1 is uplifting, exciting, and quite thoroughly enjoyable. Although the ending comes suddenly, the story line is extensive, and the soul searching of the characters provides plenty of inspiration which quite probably leads directly into Book 2.
