Many of us are lucky enough to have someone special to spend time with. For little Hayden, that special someone is his grandmother, who he calls Tiny because she is tiny. He spends a lot of time with Tiny: playing games, reading books, sharing lunch. Then one day, Hayden goes to visit Tiny and finds her sick in bed. This happens for several days in a row. He’s confused when others come in to say ‘good-bye’. And his mother is crying. When he visits again, he finds everything the way it always was, only there is no longer his beloved Tiny. He doesn’t understand when his father says Tiny is safe way up in the clouds. Hayden wants to go visit her, to rescue her from the clouds. He imagines all kinds of ways to bring Tiny back, but each idea becomes less likely. Until one night he has a dream and there’s Tiny. That’s when he learns where to find Tiny and how to keep her always with him.
Tracy Marie’s picture book story, Tiny and the Boy Who Loved Her, is a touching story about love and loss. It is cleverly and compassionately presented to appeal to a young reader and make these difficult emotions a little more understandable. The illustrations are simple and colorful and help move the story along. The plot develops with care as the author builds on the special relationship between Hayden and Tiny. When all the creative imaginings in the world can’t bring back his beloved Tiny, Hayden learns a valuable lesson about how to keep loved ones safe, even when they no longer can return to him. This is a powerful story, simply told with care.
